Are you working for a professionally managed company?


It is perhaps a matter of pride for us to label ourselves as professionals and claim to be employed in a professionally managed outfit.

The term "being professional" is the most frequently used yet largely misunderstood term. As we check our understanding of this word with others we realize that it is the classic case of the four blind men each giving the description of the elephant based on their individual feel and each being right in their own sense.

The key question is what are the qualifying conditions for a company to earn the distinction of being acknowledged as professionally managed. In other words what are the typical characteristics of the senior management team to be called professional. Is there any acid test for professionalism? What do we mean by professional conduct?

It is perhaps easier to describe what professionalism is not than what it is! However, this article is an attempt to identify and articulate the set of conditions that should exist before we call a company professional.
  • Engages professionals
    Company has an established practice of employing specialists i.e., professionally qualified personnel (B.Techs and MBAs from reputed institutions)

    It firmly believes in engaging the most qualified and trained human resources across all functions. This company is an active participant in all the premier campuses and a significant percentage of the human resources are drawn from professional institutions.
  • Ethical values and practices
    To this company the means are as important as the ends. It believes in being a law abiding corporate entity. It fulfills its legal and contractual commitments to the fullest extent. It does not resort to any dubious or unlawful means to get favor from any of the authorities.
  • Well established systems and processes
    This company has very clearly laid out processes. The operations manual covers every sphere of activity, thus leaving very little scope or adhocism or arbitrariness.

    All roles and responsibilities are well defined with no room for ambiguity. The rewards and recognition/ the performance measurement process etc are very clearly defined.
  • Respect for the individual
    This company is a crusader of strong human values thus upholding the personal dignity and self-respect of every employee. It accepts an individual in his/ her totality. It also discourages sarcastic/ judgmental/ evaluative statements, which affect the self-esteem of its employees. Admonishing employees in public is clearly forbidden here. There is a clear demarcation of the individual and their acts.As a dictum what gets discussed is the act and not the actors.
  • Customer Orientation and Responsiveness
    Customer orientation and speed of response are the very essence of this company's culture. It believes in ensuring that every letter/email/ telephone call is responded to in a timely, effective and conclusive manner.
