5 Quick Tips for Balancing your Work and Family Life
1. Think about your life as separate spheres of activity: Work, Family, and
Self. You can't give 100% to each and every sphere so work on dividing it up
equally or moving your time and energy from one sphere to the other. Try to
keep you focus on one sphere at a time, if possible. For example, keep work
out of your family time and vice versa as much as possible.
2.
Deposit time and energy into your own emotional banking account. If you were
to write a check to someone and you checking account is empty you would
bounce your check and pay extra penalties. Don't write emotional checks of
time and energy when you don't have it! Put some time into yourself so you
can give more to others. Make time everyday for devotion and plan weekly
exercise and social activities. Your work and your family will thank you in
the long run.
3. Plan and organize. Sounds simple but how many really do
it? This isn't your on-going to do list. Set down and put in your weekly,
monthly, yearly calendar for work and family. Knowing what is ahead will
help you steer your daily activities in the right direction. Otherwise
you'll end up in some dead-end place and wonder how in the world you got
here.
4. Prioritize. Another simply truth that gets neglected too often.
Listing out your priorities for work and family life will ensure you get
the big, hairy tasks in life done. The small ones frequently resolve
themselves or can be delegated to someone else. Prioritizing your work and
family will also help you set limits in both areas of your life.
5.
Have a back up plan. This might be Plan "B", "C" or farther down the
alphabet. If that is what it takes, do it. Who will watch the kids if the
regular baby sitter is sick? How will that report get send out, from the
office, if the fax machine breaks down? Who will you call if your car gets a
flat? Take an afternoon and come up with a list, with family or co-workers,
and generate some contingency plans.
