Time management tips and more
VALUE ADDITION BY PROPER TIME MANAGEMENT
We often complain about not having enough time to manage all our daily activities and most of us end up being late, wherever we may go, whatever we do.
Our job depends on reaching work on time and delivering work on time.
The former can be achieved by being punctual at all times and the latter by proper time management.
PUNCTUALITY
Punctuality means consistently being on time for work and all other appointments. How can one ensure that he/she is never late for work? Here are some simple guidelines:
Set your alarm 5 minutes before, i.e. if you set your alarm at 6.00 a.m. change it to 5.55 a.m. This would give you 5 minutes extra to become fully awake and fresh.
Schedule your morning activities and fix time for each of it.
If possible, prepare the night, before like iron the clothes you will wear the next day etc.
Always leave for any appointments 15 – 20 minutes earlier. This extra time would give you a breather during traffic jams and other contingencies.
By cultivating the habit of punctuality, you benefit by creating a good impression of yourself on your superiors, clients and moreover it gives you breathing space and time for planning your work for the day.
But we are after all just human beings. What are the acceptable bases for being late for work? One could be laid down by illness, have to attend some social obligation, or be subject to incidents and accidents. So, how does an employee handle these situational uncertainties?
Have a valid, good reason why you are late and inform your superior/boss as soon as possible.
Ensure you speak to the right person, i.e. the person in charge
Explain the reason for being late: let your explanations be clear, complete in details, valid and authentic
There are indeed wide ranges of situations where one might be late for work, but with consistent power of habit, you can be on time, every time.
PROPER TIME MANAGEMENT
An employee is paid for the time on the job. Therefore, an organization values and pays for the employees’ time. As employees we have to be aware of the time worth of the work we do. If we don’t we will be squandering away the most precious of resources: TIME.
How do we ensure that this does not happen?
Prioritize your work, in the order of their importance.
Allocate appropriate time to important tasks.
Identify and eliminate time wasters and time sinks
Focus on value added tasks
In sum, wise and proper time management is mainly concentrating on value added tasks-which contribute to the organizational objective.
These guidelines will definitely help us to value not just the 24 hrs at our disposal, but also those of others and lead us to our goals.
